Sorry I’ve been missing for a few days. My friend Amanda was here visiting last week so we were out doing lots of fun stuff in and around Melbourne. I have lots of great stuff to share with you from her visit!
After a somewhat trying turn through customs, Amanda arrived Saturday morning. As the gracious hosts we are, we wanted her to get quickly caught up to Australia time, so we wisked her around the city for her first day. We visited the Northcote Winter Artisan’s market, which was full of adorable, expensive items, had lunch at a cute cafe near by, and then took the train into the city.
First stop, Federation Square, which, among other things, has a new exhibit featuring…..ABBA!
Sorry, folks, none of us were interested in shelling out 20 plus dollars to actually go into the exhibit, so you’ll just have to wait until ABBA World comes to a venue near you to check it out.
We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring some of Melbourne’s small alleys and arcades. These little streets used to provide access to the backs of businesses, but many of them have been roofed for protection from the weather and feature cute shops and cafes. One in particular is an artistic space for teenagers from a nearby halfway house. The alley is completely covered in graffiti and paintings that continually change and are designed by the kids.
I love the symbolism of this phoneix.
Tomorrow I’ll tell you about our first excursion out of Melbourne down The Great Ocean Road which featured amazing rock formations, whales, and koalas!
